...the Beatles shot the film ‘Help’ in Obertauern in 1965?
On 13 March 1965, the Beatles came to Obertauern for filming. 60 years later, we remember the celebrity guests and the Beatles’ only concert in Austria. Sixty years ago, the mushroom heads from Liverpool visited us in Obertauern to shoot scenes for their film ‘Help’ in the wintry snowy landscape. Many onlookers accompanied the film shoot, which is said to have been somewhat chaotic. Most of the sequences were shot spontaneously and without a script, perhaps also because none of the Beatles apart from John Lennon had ever been on skis before. Four young ski instructors from the village had the special task of standing in for the Fab Four. Find out more about the Beatles and Obertauern in our Obertauern Chronicle. Our team will be happy to inform you.

...the Beatles doubles for the film Help were young ski instructors from Obertauern?
The head of the ski school at the time, Andreas Krallinger, was asked to organise doubles for the ski scenes. He was also asked to double the jump over a ski jump for Leo McKern, the villain in the film. Krallinger chose the ski instructors Herbert Lürzer for Paul McCartney and Gerhard Krings for George Harrison, both from Obertauern, as well as Franz Bogensperger from Mariapfarr for John Lennon and Hans Pertscherer from Styria for Ringo Starr as doubles. The fee was agreed at a considerable thousand shillings a day for the ski instructors at the time. Director Richard Lester dropped the first Austrian flap for the film ‘Help’ on 14 March at 9:00 am.

...the only concert in Austria took place in Obertauern?
At the end of the shooting of the film ‘Help’, there was an improvised legendary concert in the former Hotel Marietta, incidentally the only one in Austria. The Beatles sang and played songs such as ‘Summertime’ and spirituals until the early hours of the morning.

...the Beatles played several private concerts in Obertauern?
The Beatles clearly loved it in Obertauern, so much so that they even got carried away and gave a more or less secret private concert in a hotel in Obertauern. The Beatles certainly created another skiing boom. God and the world wanted to come to Obertauern to ski from this point onwards at the latest.

...the Beatles originated from Liverpool, United Kingdom?
The Beatles were a British beat, rock and pop band from Liverpool in the 1960s, consisting of John Lennon (1940-1980), Paul McCartney (* 1942), George Harrison (1943-2001) and Ringo Starr (* 1940).
Did you know that...
... the Beatles' name was created in honour of another musician?
As the Beatles were all big fans of Buddy Holly and his band The Crickets, they wanted to call themselves something similar. John is said to have come up with the name ‘beetles’ while searching for another insect. And as they were a beat group, John also decided to turn the Beetles into the Beatles.

...there are 3 Beatles memorials in Obertauern?
* There is a memorial at the Kirchbühellift
* Another one is in front of the Hotel Edelweiss
* The third can be found at the Grünwaldkopf mountain station

... the plot of the film ‘Help’ revolves around a stolen diamond ring?
Director Richard Lester dropped the first Austrian flap for the film ‘Help’ on 14 March at 9.00 am. This slapstick film is about a stolen diamond ring. The Beatles are pursued by a crazy sect in a breathless chase. ‘I still don’t understand the plot of the film to this day,’ says Heribert Lürzer, still wondering about the confused content of the film.
